3 Pitches & Storyboard

Today we pitched 3 ideas for our Music Video. We picked the best one, for its possibility to be created.

Pitch 1
After much discussion we finally agreed to do the song "Do Wah Diddy" and find a cover of the song or karaoke. We wanted something funny and entertaining, something where we could have a lot of fast cutting editing, to keep the audiences attention as well as quirky editing and a variety of camera angles.

Genre: 60's music
Track: Do Wah Diddy Cover
Dress code: 50's style
Boys: Leather jackets, shades.
Girls: Skirts, blouses, make-up, heels, jewellery
Setting: Streets, auditorium
Narrative: The girls want the boy, but the boy likes another girl
Camera Shots: tilt up - to show the dress code of the female walking down the street, to show she is an important character.

Long shot - to show the location, characters, dress code, props etc and also allows the audience to see what is going on.

Mid shot -  To show the dress code as well as expression and location.

Close up - To show expression, facial features such as the shades being pulled down by the girl and winking into the camera.

On an angle - to give it a quirky and different approach/style as well as keeping the audience interested.

Follow shot - so that the shots are not static all the time, to follow the characters movements or to follow the action.

Locations: Streets (hence why the lyrics say "there she was just walking down the street")

Actors: Boy - Ben Garner
Girls- Chloe Berry (Me) Jasmine Hartley, Chloe.M

We can do this as an illustrated storyboard
Storyboard

For the Do Wah Diddy cover we looked at the lyrics and made it a narrative visual. We added a more of a realty element to it by giving it a storyline and to make it show that these types of stories happen in the world. The male character is surrounded by girls who are trying to impress him but the girl who walks down the street is all natural and seems she doesn't need to impress. She attracts the male characters attention and the other girls become jealous.

The fun element is that they will be people singing to the camera and possibly dancing in the street that would look like normal people.

Here where the other 2 pitches.

Pitch 2

Evanescence - Made of Stone

This song is coming out this year, might be some conflict between bands video (if they have one) and our own. We might not be able to get a band to cover this in time, or ask permission from someone, if no one as done one.
Evanescence is a popular band and are well known for their song "Bring Me to Life" and "My Immortal".

I would have the female actor, probably dressed in a black outfit, possible a long layered dress and cape, something that resembles Amy Lee's style, and they would be a male actor in black jeans and a grey hoodie with the hood up and only his bottom half of his face is visible. Both are standing on a street with a good few feet apart. The female will be singing the song as well as looking at him in a serious expression when she isn't speaking. A camera close up shows the males' mouth moving. Then it all blurs around her to show that she isn't listening. While this is happening the camera will cut back to the performance element, where the band will be playing in an empty warehouse and the same female actor singing in the band.

They will be a table with a burgundy table cloth with a chessboard on top. The male actor will be sat down waiting for her to join him as she is walking towards the table. She sits down, they start to play and you can see that there is tension for her and not for the male.

Both are walking in the Town Centre, which is full of activity. She becomes playful in her actions, and jumps from different platforms, such as walls. She is singing to him, smiling. Then is cuts back to them on the street few feet apart to resemble the "so the judgement seems fair"

We cut back to the chess game and the female is struggling to play. She bits her nails, runs her hand through her hair and looks exhausted. He smiles wickedly and she starts to become upset. While this is happening it will cut to a field where they are walking towards each other.

It cuts to the field where they are only a few feet apart. He places his hand onto her chest and pulls out a paper heart painted red. There is a wind effect which creates her clothes to be blown in front of her, as though the power of his action as hurt her. He starts to walk away and she is crying and falls to the floor on her knees. All this will be in slow motion and then it will cut to her walking past a wall full of pictures of her and her loved one, she looks at them, smiles and her eyes are full of tears, she takes one down and one of her tears falls onto the picture, then the whole wall sets on fire and she watches them burn.

She gets angry and gives up on the chess game. She flips the table over and the chessboard and its pieces fall to the floor. She then turns and walks away and sings the song back at him, there is cutting back to the performance piece and then it fades shows her walking away and then cuts to the male and a tear rolls down his cheek.

Pitch 3

Adele - Hiding my Heart

The general narrative goes along with the lyrics. We will have the girl, who will also be singing the song (Kerry) in a field hopefully the weather will be a little windy so it will allow her hair will blow giving it a dramatic effect, she is sad and dwelling on memories from the past of her boyfriend. The memories will be in Sepia to indicate to the audience the guide of the video, colour being in the present. Kerry will be lip syncing to the song within performance and within narrative, Kerry is the artist, Kerry Louise and she is keen to perform for us. We will be going with the lyrics through out for the narrative and also sticking with the performance element by having Kerry in a dark room, with a spot light on her miming the guitar to the song and a boy to mime the piano.

Music Video & the roots of music television

We looked and answered questions to get a better understanding of where music videos started from and what makes them memorable.

1.) What were some of the first music videos? Which early music video is held up as a classic?

Bob Dillian's music video was the first of the early music videos, it was simple and effective, and the camera angle never changed and was a creative idea, one person on location with white cardboard with words from the lyrics on them.

Queens Bohemian Rhapsody was a classic, due to its catchy song and its different style of music video; the lyrics were catchy and clever.

2.) Who was behind the launch of MTV? Was it the music industry, or the television industry?

TV Industry, they launched music videos on the TV, to promote the song as well as the music video.

3.) Which artist dominated early 80's music videos?

Rock - Bon Jovi - American soft rock

Madonna - Electro

New romantics - Adam and the Ants

4.) What was important in these early videos - the visual appeal or the narrative appeal?

Visual appeal was most important. Artists wanted something different to their music videos so they stood out. Special effects where something that catches the audiences eye. As technology developed more and more artists where opting for something quirky and different.  The performance makes the video less boring, they have narrative and performance to see artist/band doing what they do best and also seeing them in the narrative. Guns n Roses had that within their music video November Rain. It also makes it memorable especially if it's different, which helps the audience remember certain symbols/conventions or scenes, to identify the video and song.
Songs with their videos make better visual and also make the song its self memorable and more popular.

5.) What turned MTV from an narrow-market niche station, into a global, mainstream phenomenon?

Via com pushed MTV to international and Satellite TV Cable came out which made it easier for people to watch music videos along with their songs. This is another alternative to listening to the radio or CD'S/Tapes.
More channels meant more videos/artists could be shown.

6.) Why was the Thriller video so successful?

It was a short film (14 minutes) first longest music video.
Michael Jackson was a popular icon, he danced and acted in his own video The video was choreographed and had a lengthy amount of time for the dancing piece. The special effects used were a contributing factor as well as the costumes and set design. It was the most expensive music video created.

Pink as made a great impression on the younger generation, she sings songs that have meaning and something that is worth something for the fans, songs in which they can relate to. In a personal quote she says:

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga was a new and different idol. She dressed in bazaar clothing (Such as the Meat Dress, see below), her songs where catchy and her hair had unique hairstyles.
Her rise to fame continued, she won awards at almost every awards event, she became a none stop popular celebrity that everyone was talking about. Her dress code and hairstyles more bazaar and her videos just got too much and became over the top and too weird. Never the less youths still like her music and her songs are played regularly on the radio.

2.) If music critics are worried that pop videos are becoming necessary to enhance a musician's career, why are they not concerned about the impact this has on emerging artists?

It creates popularity for the artist and as the artist is already famous and successful, they have plenty of money to use for locations, sets, a wide variety of promotions and hire extras/dancers. Emerging artists are limited to promotion (They have Youtube, Twitter, Myspace etc) and are limited to make videos that don't look professional and rich like those in popular music videos as they themselves have to buy their own equipment and find the time to create the videos and get a group together to create it and also balance their work life so they have money to support themselves.

3.) What is the primary purpose of the pop video?

To entertain, it gives influence on fashion, gives ideas to those who are looking for inspiration and to become more popular and promote the Song/Album/Artist and aim for the top of charts to boost their popularity and success. Their is also dominance over other artists and the industry are competitive, the artists and their producers want them to be the best and so thinking to new and creative ideas and coming up with songs that people will sing along to and love is a challenge as well as keeping their own style and themes but also developing as a person with their music and exploring more than just their familiar ground, experimenting with new ideas and sounds. The music video as to be catchy and interesting, it as to be where the view as to watch the video all the way through and be memorable, where others can show their friends and they watch it together. The video might have an important narrative which can be related to current events/affairs at the time as well as the audience being able to relate to the narrative themselves, which makes the video more powerful when it can reach into the audience's hearts.

4.) How have the public come to react to the videos themselves?

They have their own opinion, those who like a certain genre will like that and go and listen to songs in that genre, but others not so much. We are constantly looking for something different. For example Lady Gaga, she came onto our screens with a completely different look, she wore strange outfits, her scenes where creative and random and she had similar themes and styles in her videos. In a recent blog on Project Inspired Lady Gaga is being discussed on her messages in the videos relating to religious beliefs. See link below

http://www.projectinspired.com/what-you-need-to-know-lady-gaga-and-her-satanic-message/

Within the article it explains how her recent video "You and I" is "Worse than ever" this indicates the Lady Gaga is going down in peoples interest, that she over does things and might be running out of ideas.

Before videos where able to be downloaded they could be bought. Now you have the music video that comes with a DVD of a tour/live performance at a venue with behind the scenes footage and the audio CD of the live performance.

Music Video Production

Music Terms & studying music videos
1.) What use do you think the lyrics are put to when making a video?

For meaning and/or a message to the audience, to illustrate the scene allowing the artist to emphasise the meaning/message that they are trying to get across or to tell the story in a more dramatic way. Lyrics can be catchy, so to allow the audience to catch on with the song, sing a long and to get a certain line insiden audiences head so that it they cant stop listening to it, or they can't stop singing that part of the song.

2.) Narrative & Performance: How important is the narrative to the pop video? What relevance is the performance aspect of the pop video?

To engage an audience, to keep them watching. Allows the artist to show off their talent and/or the talent of other people on the screen making it more engaging, interesting and entertaining. Allows the audience to see their favourite artist/band.

3.) Star Image: How important do you think the star image is in respect to a pop video's success?

We watch the videos to see the star, we want to seem them in different styles of videos, allow us to see the development of an artist, to see their dress code, get ideas/inspiration, to see different things from that artist, new and different styles of videos to their new material. We want to see what they are capable of and see what new tricks, stunts and dance moves they can do.

4.) Visuals to Songs:
A.) What is Illustration in terms of a pop video?

To tell a story/message to the audience, which can allow an audience to relate to or to allow the message to make an audience think and make them have an emotional response.

B.) And what is Amplification in terms of a pop video?

To exaggerate the lyrics, e.g. taking gigantic steps, this is applied through the editing process, where sections of a take are taken out to show a person for example walking down a corridor at different times, without it taking up all of the time it took to walk down the corridor, speeding up the process to move on with the narrative. As well as this you can fade into the next piece or scene.
C.) What is disjuncture and is it a good idea to use it in a pop video?

It is where part of the visual/narrative as no relation to the video/lyrics but makes for a fun/quirky video, which can catch an audience out as well as keeping them interested.

5.) Technical Aspects
A.) What is meant by the term "Speed!" in relation to pop videos? Give Examples of their use.

It is the cutting rate within the video, within the editing process how long one piece of footage is to another. Usually pop videos are fast paced, with their up beat sound. So the cutting rate is important to keep the audience watching as you don't want to keep on the same camera angle and the same scene/narrative/performance for too long, as this will become boring and less engaging.

B.) What is Meat! in relation to a video?
These are close ups on the face, mainly on the artist/band members, to see emotion and to give variety of camera angles as well as to engage an audience through narrative and performance.

C.) How are Beats! used in a video?

These are used when actions are cut to a beat, for example, where an action that the artist/actor does within the video goes with the beat of the song, or with to cut each frame to the beat to the song. Overall actions through editing or visual on screen to the beat of the song.

D.) How are colour & lighting used in pop videos?

To create effect or to create a certain mood/atmosphere. Spotlights on the artist allow them to be centre stage or the main star/performer of the video the one the audience look more at. Lights will indicate mood. Usually the videos are well lit, bright, flashing lights and/or strobes. Lights tend to keep with the genre and/or style of the video/song or artist style.

E.) What elements are common in terms of mise-en-scene in pop videos?

They place the narrative scene in a place that relates to the story, usually a couple at home or out in town, doing in activities, or usually out on a street, preferably an American town. Artist and costumes usually link to their style they have taken for a long time and resemble the modern day mise-en-scene with big labels e.g. Apple and PlayStation/Xbox. The lighting is usually a bright colour theme.

R'N'B usually consists of - a swimming pool, sport cars, rich people, big houses

Looking at Music Videos from VH1 for Camera angles/shot inspiration/ideas

Today we looked at music videos from VH1 made from 1996-2001. We didn't find much of the camera work and editing useful, some camera tricks and uses looked interesting and would be good to use, but the videos that we looked at where too fast, modern and not related to our style.

Our music video being a 60's on take needs us to look at videos that have that sort of style around that era.

I liked the focus that the camera does, from a blur to focus. It keeps the audience watching and allows them to see what it is revealing.

I also liked the camera panning on characters such as that in Robby Williams
I also liked the hand held camera shots; it gives a more entertaining feature instead of the shots being static.

I found the music video Ironic by Alanis Morissette interesting and fun, although the video is simple; we have 3 other versions of the singer in the car, although we don't see them all in the same shot.

The Best and Worst Genres to work with - Metal/Rock

Metal/Rock
Best

Metal can be possible, depending on the type of narrative you are going go with and the style you want the music to be. You can go for something soft, such as a Nickelback style or something heavy such as Disturbed .With bands such as Evanescence, Nightwish and Within Temptation, tends to go for the same type of dramatic style and similar but also completely different locations, with their own styles, ideas and narratives.

Artist – Evanescence

Song – Bring Me to Life

There are little factors which can be possible from this music video that can be achieved. The interior scenes, where Amy passes the rooms are possible, but the climbing of the building wouldn’t be possible without the full experienced and trained professionals to help us. We don’t have the money to do so and the Green screen they used wouldn’t be possible on their scale.

This would be put in after with a particular software, the green screen would be on a very large scale and so the possibility of us achieving this is very slim.

Here Amy is passing rooms as she is climbing the building, this would be possible in a different circumstance, such as different scenarios in a hotel the performer, who sings the song, will pass the various rooms, or another one could be passing through houses, where each house is different, with their own different families etc.

The building is made on a set and behind it would be green screen where after capturing the video, they will replace the green screen with CGI; they will insert the city where the green screen is.

This would be possible, the band are already in a room in the building, performing the song. This can be possible depending on what type of genre we go with. Cutting back and forth from performance and narrative, is a great technique, it keeps the audiences eye on the video and they
get to see a variety of performance methods, as well as getting to see the band/artist perform.

The same here again, green screen will be surrounding the building and the green screen will be replaced with the insert of CGI buildings/city

The wires attached to Amy for the falling scene will prove challenging, depending on the story line. To have equipment for this on this scale would be impossible and expensive, health and safety is high risk, even though you have a crash mat underneath and an experience and medics on stand by, you still have those possibilities of injury.

Song – My Immortal

In black and white, this music video as a narrative but generally is a piece where the artist/band are in different locations singing the song. The reason why the song is so popular is from the follow up from Bring Me to Life and the song is a beautiful piece, with strings, piano vocals and with the band coming in with the final chorus.  This would be a possible music video style to choose, locations would need to be varied, a place for the band would be needed (if a band is included) and the time to storyboard the piece.

The variety of locations and angle shots keeps this video interesting and holds the audiences attention. From High angle to show the location and close up to show the singer/artist lip syncing the words.

These are a few of the many locations they chose to shoot. The locations where in the same place, in Brazil and so where easier for access for different places and a variety of interest for the audience.

This is the location where the band plays at the final chorus. The room as lights as well as natural light flooding in from the floor to ceiling high windows, which gives the black and white effect a brighter effect.
Close up shot of Amy lip syncing the song.
Ben walking through a street and he appears in other several locations.
High angle shot of the location, gives the audience the indication of where Amy is.
Amy in another location, on a roof which as a good angle on the city, which looks like it is night, when the sun is setting, there is still light there to illuminate the scene which makes the black and white effect less dark.

A long angle shot of the band with their instruments and equipment. So throughout the video we have seen every single band member.

Song – Good Enough

This song is just Amy on her own, in other videos we see her and the band within the video, here this song was written by her and was something personal to her. They used a set fully kitted out, with furniture and ornaments and the grand piano was on a raised up platform where she plays for most parts of the last section of the video.  We have a piano but to be used in the way that Amy did in her video wouldn’t be possible, the piano belongs to the school and we won’t be able to find one that can have water pouring down on it and fire surrounding it. The fire would be a safety hazard and the rain would probably need to be natural if we wanted it to look professional. To do a video on this scale wouldn’t be possible but can be done in some aspects.

Here they have used certain softwares to put the floorboards back together. After this we see a close up shot of Amy walking across the floorboards and where her feet have been have left imprints on the floor. The footprints fade into the board with a sort of steaming effect coming off.
Here the furniture is a key example for the conventions in this music video. There is a lot there and shows how realistic it looks, as though it belongs to someone. It also shows the style of the video and Amy's personal style/personality.
Again, this is probably been made with a particular software, the wine glass, is melting and so the water is too and is being poured out at the bottom. Along with this many objects melt and then it all catches fire.
From looking at the behind the scenes footage, there was a recording of the fire here, without Amy and then there was another where she was in sat at the piano with the fire around her. They have taken both recordings and edited the visual, so they took a few flames out that covered up Amy.
Here, we have the water pouring down which distinguishes the flames. This creates a more dramatic effect and keeps up with that idea of the elements, which also mirrors Amy's feelings and mimics the lyrics.
The plants growing across the set and over the furniture are all put in later with particular softwares, this creates the effect of water helps plants to grow, the water stops and the plants grow and ends the video beautifully.
They have used different camera techniques to view the different parts of the video and the effects from the melting of objects to the fire and the final element of the plants growing. They use tilt, zoom, a static shot, close ups, long shots.

This is the final shot of the video, this is created through again with particular softwares as you can tell it does look CGI like compared to that of Amy in the top left hand corner.
This is from the behind the scenes (Making of Good Enough) and behind Amy you can see the materials and set pieces that are used, which shows that the place was pacifically made for the video and not at somebody's home.
Here we have different shots the one of the pieces in the music video, where Amy takes a picture and places it under the floor boards where she buries it in the soil. We can see the sort of camera work that is being used to make the video look professional.
Here the crew are bringing in pieces of the set, they have taken a spare empty place, probably a storage building and used it to create the set.
Here they set objects and the set on fire and film various pieces of the set on fire in different angles and camera techniques.
They have the fire brigade on set to control the fires, so nobody gets injured and the fire doesn't get out of control.
Here the camera as a cover to protect it from the water that pours down on the set and also allows the camera men to film Amy when she is further into the set and they don't get wet and the camera is protected as the wires are hidden on the special equipment that they use.
